How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire

It’s happened to all of us—your car has a flat tire and you need a quick fix to get to a shop to replace it, repair it, or get to your destination. However, you don’t have a normal-sized tire that fits your car. So, you grab your spare tire and switch it out so you can be on your way.

The first question you might ask is, “how long can I drive on this spare tire?”

At McDonald Hyundai, we aim to answer that question for drivers throughout Littleton, Parker, and Castle Rock, CO, and provide additional information about the spare tire in your car.

Quick Facts About Your Spare Tire

Before we dive in too deep, there are a few quick facts you should know about the spare tire in your trunk:

  • The spare tire is considered a temporary tire, often referred to as a donut. It’s really only meant to get you to your immediate destination.
  • The donut tire is not intended to be driven on at a high speed. At most, you can drive at 50 MPH on a donut tire, but you should probably drive slower than that.
  • This kind of tire is not suitable for highway driving, so avoid the highway as much as possible.
  • Consult your owner’s manual and check the correct tire pressure of the donut. They generally should be inflated to about 60 psi.

Driving on Your Spare Tire

Time to answer the million-dollar question: how long can you drive on a donut before you absolutely have to get a regular-size tire?

Not very long. As these tires are meant to be used in emergency situations, temporary spare tires may only last about 50 miles. You should consult your owner’s manual to find out exactly how long your car’s spare tire will last.

If you need a tire replacement or repair, come see us at our service center and we’ll take care of you.

That being said, if you have a full-size spare tire handy, it is likely new or lightly used. You should be able to drive on it for roughly four to five years, depending on your driving habits.

What Happens If I Drive on a Spare Tire for Too Long?

By now, you know that your car’s spare tire is a “break glass in case of emergency” situation. You might be wondering what can happen if you drive on it longer than you should. Potentially, you could damage a number of parts of your car, including your transmission. This could lead to many expensive repairs on top of what it would cost to replace or repair the flat tire.
